One thing is certain. I won’t be reading THESE books in bed. They are huge! I haven’t even gotten beyond the introduction yet, but wanted to reiterate that I haven’t previously read much of anything written by Ken Wapnick or watched his videos, listened to his audios or anything of that nature. I read “Absence from Felicity” because I wanted to know more about Helen and how she came to receive the Course but for the most part have avoided reading any commentaries on the Course itself for the entire -- nine years I think -- that I’ve been studying it now. Anything I’ve “known” about Ken’s teaching I knew only from parts posted to internet forums or other people quoting him, some of which I loved and appreciated greatly and some of which I hated and thought the man must be reading a different book than I was reading and totally out of his mind. One thing with which I think I have always agreed, however, was this idea which I just reread in the introduction to JTTT: “…before we can leave the morass we first have to recognize life here for the misery it is. To help us achieve this recognition is the primary goal of A Course in Miracles.” I spent many years in various forms of the “spiritual self-help circuit” and can honestly say they ALL “worked.” I never tried one that didn’t do what I expected it to do – for a time. But as the Course says we all must do I eventually realized the effects were always temporary because they didn’t help me to uncover the real problem, but only treated the symptoms. Providing a sense of “personal peace” or “individual healing” is exactly what ego defenses are designed to do and they do it quite effectively. If they didn’t, we wouldn’t still be using them. But the Peace/Home the practice of ACIM intends to reveal or to help us remember/recognize, isn’t personal or individual, which in my opinion is exactly why it holds little or no attraction for most “spiritual seekers.” Although it does lend itself to being used as a “spiritual self-help book.”
