One week ago we welcomed three new elephants to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Swarna, Kamala and Maharani continue to adjust to their new home. Calgary Zoo keepers are working with our keepers throughout this transition and the 30 day quarantine. Keepers report that all elephants appear calm and comfortable. They are eating all of their diet and drinking well. Training sessions are still basic but are progressing well as keepers slowly add more complicated behaviors such as training for blood and health checks. In fact, both Kamala and Swarna did a stretch for the Calgary keepers yesterday–step 1 to a lay down–the position from which they collect blood.
