One week from tomorrow, voters in Scotland will decide the future - TopicsExpress

One week from tomorrow, voters in Scotland will decide the future of their nation. Will it be independent for the first time since 1707, or will it continue on as part of the U.K.? Theres a lot to consider, but one of the dumber arguments Ive heard floated against independence is that an independent Scotland would not be able to defend itself adequately. From whom? England isnt going to invade again. Scotland sits squarely in the center of N. Europe, so its surrounded by peaceful countries. Even if the Scots dont work out the issue of what to do with the Trident subs currently based there in a way that allows them to join NATO--so what? Its not as if England or other European powers would stand around twiddling their thumbs if the another power such as Russia were to move against the Scots. Scotland could defend itself quite well with a handful of territorial defense troops and the equivalent of a coast guard. theguardian/politics/2014/sep/09/-sp-scottish-independence-everything-you-need-to-know-vote
