One year ago I was brought nauseated and partially unconscious to a rural hospital near Tenkodogo, Burkina Faso, where I spent almost 24 hours teetering along the brim of health. The experience haunts me a year later as both a nightmarish reality and a haptic dream, whose significance grew beyond a week in Africa and the following semester of struggle. The people who were with me deserve an enormous thank you, especially Juan Cristaldo, always with a smile and a joke, and Melissa Alexander, whose calmness was immensely comforting. Thank you Stefanie and Regina who were also at my side and helped communicate with the doctors. Thank you Kayla for keeping me company during my hotel confinement. Thank you Jerome, Jose, Tian, for holding my hand and carrying me when I needed to be carried. Thank you Ruyi for sitting beside my bed, and Kwabena, Eduardo, and Edward for your nods of understanding. Thank you to my wonderful roommates for your continuous support, Beth, Joanna, and Marianne. Thank you to my family, Alvin, Sandra, Leah, Benjamin, Daniel, and my surrogate family, Rita and Mike. And thank you, always, for everything, the Jo in Jobecca.
