One year ago this morning, our sweet baby boy, Peanut died just six days after a cluster seizure. We learned that the seizure was caused by a vile disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) and that he was going to die. What we hoped was not true and then hoped we would have several months only took six days to take him from us. He died peacefully at my side on September 17, 2013 after six days struggling with the ravages of this disease. Peanut was a miracle since birth, surviving numerous infections, cleft palate surgery, collapsed larynx and trachea and a host of other respiratory issues inflicted upon him because of a miserable backyard breeder who was breeding pugs with recessive genes to create dwarf pugs because she could sell dwarves for more money. None of his infirmities ever slowed him down. He had the heart and soul of a pug ten times his size. Though his first three years knew sickness, he was always loved. The breeder planned to put him down at birth but an angel spared his life and took him in caring for him as best she could with sparse financial resources. Regina, his first mom, gave him the best gift she could after caring for him with everything she had. She gave him a chance at life by allowing a rescue to take him. After being rescued by Pug Rescue of Sacramento (PROS) and having his cleft palate repaired in April 2012, we were so lucky to spend the last 17 months of his life with him when he joined our family. He brought laughter and smiles to absolutely everyone who ever met him. He was healthy and happy following his surgery and was such a fun and happy pug. Even in the doctor’s office during his final days, people were taking pictures of this magnificent little pug who beat disease and death so many times in his short life but was always ready to play and clown around. Sadly for us and all who know him, his poor little body was just not strong enough to beat this vile and horrific disease. Our friend Craig helped us by creating the attached video to commemorate the life of this incredible little pug. He was such a gift to both Nilo and me. Despite his untimely death, we would not trade the 17 months we spent with him for anything. He was an incredible little boy. We miss and will always love him. We will never forget him. Rest in peace, angel pug, until we see you again.
