One year ago today I came out publicly as Trans. I cannot believe - TopicsExpress

One year ago today I came out publicly as Trans. I cannot believe its been a year. Flown by. You wouldnt believe how shit scared I was to do this, yet this remains the singular proudest thing Ive ever written, regardless of how well its written. My views have developed since this but the only significant change is I use Sie/Hir pronouns unlike when this was first published. In light of Leelah Alcorns death, it popped into my head again. Im lucky insofar that I have some amazingly supportive friends and family and a college thats been generally good with Trans issues. Not perfect but one where Ive not felt unsafe amongst anyone. For anyone who comes out, remember that theres always support for you when you do in the way of groups in areas, social media, and so on. Remember it doesnt get better automatically, it does when you reach out and decide not to take shit anymore. For yourself more than anyone. Its also your responsibility to learn of different identities in the Trans umbrella, your privilege in terms of social position youre in, what groups you could get involved in if you want to. This was one of the best decisions Ive ever made. So this is for Leelah and countless other Trans people whove lost their lives because theyve tried to be too strong for too long, because the world of cis normativity, capitalism and patriarchy is so cruel it suffocates you. Happy New Year. Rest in Power.
