One year ago today I made my decision to move down to California - TopicsExpress

One year ago today I made my decision to move down to California to begin establishing residency and attempt to enroll in grad school at UCSB. In five days I packed my belongings into my Chevy and made my farewells to many friends and family. On December 1st I set out on an my journey across Washington and Oregon to central California. Chased over the night by a blizzard that was shutting down entire expanses of I5 as I passed through. But that good ok Chevy carried me the way. I ended up in isla vista just out side of Santa Barbara by the uc campus. In 24 hours I landed myself a studio apartment and a full time job working at a sandwhich shop. I stayed here for two months before realizing that Santa Barbara was not the place for me. In two days I found my way out of my lease, a new place to live in San Luis Obispo and enough money to support myself for a month. The day after I had arrived in San Luis Obispo, after unpacking, I went to explore the area and found myself wondering the CalPoly campus. I was wondering around the archetecture building when I came across a man who asked if he could help me. I told him no and explained I was just exploring the campus as a a prospective grad student, expecting him to continue on his way. Rather, he asked me what I was interested in studying. To which I replied simply, I dont know. So he asked me what I studied in my undergrad. And I explained my rather complicated and confusing independent study in biocultural ecology at evergreen state college. From what I had explained to this man, he said ah ha come with me. I followed him into the adjacent building to the office of a man named Cornelius who was the associate professor of the masters in city and regional planning program. And upon arrival the man knocked on the door and saying Cornelius, I have a prospect for you, as he pushed me in the room and walked away. (I havent seen that man again). After a long conversation, I was convinced to apply for fall enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year with only two days before the deadline. I did what I could and hoped for the best. Now one year since I made my decision to move. I am a full time student working on my masters in city and regional planning. I am working two jobs to support my self and pay my way through. But I am also living in the beautiful beach town of morro bay, and have made countless new friends and forged many great relations along the way. If you have a dream, pursue it. Dont worry about the fine details, just trust your heart, learn to listen to its guidance, and be willing to work for it. Dont expect the handouts in life, be willing to do the work you need to to achieve your dreams. No one can bring them to life except you.
