OneShot #15! THE HUNGER GAMES; HAYMITCH. Rosalie watched the re-play of the reaping, her mentor beside her. She watched Effie call her name, watched the girls sigh with relief before guilt flooded their features and they turned; all but Rosalie who stood tall, her eyes calm as she walked forward and up the stairs. She faintly noticed that she looked strong and beautiful, calm, afraid and broken hearted. Mostly, Rosalie watched her mother cry out for her and fall to her knees. She watched her little sister sob and fall into the arms of Rosalies best friend -also crying- as they attempted to comfort each other. Her father also fell, wrapping his arms around her mother. Her two brothers stiffened, their fear becoming stronger; would they have to kill their own sister? Fortunately, they wouldnt have to. For the boy chosen was nothing to her. Any more. She had loved him once, once they had been best friends. Rosalie didnt notice the tears that fell from her chocolate eyes and down her rosy cheeks. But Haymitch did. He noticed how her lip quivered, how she clutched onto her knees and that her dark gold skin had gone a shade paler. He knew he would regret it later, but he couldnt help it, he wrapped his arms around her and ran a hand through her brown hair. And he did regret it later, but he wouldve regretted walking away even more. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ “Haymitch?” a gentle voice roused him from his sleep, and his eyes opened to see Rosalie standing before him. She tucked her hair behind her ear and shuffled nervously. “Haymitch.. I go into the arena tomorrow and I’m afraid; I cant sleep.” she whispered. The two had gotten close lately. In fact, whenever around Haymitch, Rosalie found herself more nervous and self conscious but so much happier. As cliché as it it is; her stomach filled with butterflies, her nerves were set on fire and her mind spun. What she didnt realise is that he felt the same. Whenever she was around he forgot the horrors of the arena, the nightmares, the flashbacks. He didnt need to drink. And it hurt him, more than he could say, knowing that even if she did come back -to him- she would be different, changed. And its for these reasons, that he groggily moved to the side and pulled back the covers for her. He watched as she climbed in the bed beside him, pulling the covers over her slim stomach and petite shoulders. Slowly -carefully- she wrapped herself around him, burying her face in his shoulder. “I dont want to die.” she murmured so softly, he wasnt sure is he had heard her correctly. “you wont.” he replied, trying to reassure her. “you dont know that, you cant promise me that.” she informed him firmly, and to that, he had no reply. “have you made any alliances?” he asked her, running a hand through her hair, a very common habit now. Even people from the capitol -including Ceaser- had commented on how close they were. “only 1. that boy from 4, remember him? His name is Finnick. He looks strong, powerful. I didnt want to make too many, more chance I would be stabbed in the back; quite literally.” A pang of jealousy ran through Haymitch and he scorned himself; jealousy? How childish. “Good girl. Try and get some sleep love.” he told her gently, causing her heart to skip a little faster. “Haymitch? I wish I had met you sooner. I wish this wasnt happening to me.” she whispered, her eyes fluttering shut. Haymitch sighed and pulled her closer to him, kissing her head softly. “me too Rosie, Me too.” ~~~~~~~~~~ Rosalie sat, staring at the tube when Haymitch walked in. instantly, she threw herself into his arms. “Haymitch, I’m scared.” she whispered against his shoulder. He sighed, wrapping his arms around around her waist as he shushed her. “I know. I know love, and its understandable. I’ve been there remember?” he pauses and she nods. “dont run to the cornucopia, its a blood bath. A slaughter waiting to happen. You grab a bag and a weapon if you can. Dont light a fire, find shelter.” she nodded but cut him off when he spoke again; “I know Haymitch, I know all of this; youve told me. Just... hold me.” she whispered. He pulled away and smiled at her before pulling a necklace out of his pocket. “here. This was my mothers, I took it into the arena with me and I want you to take it with you. For luck.” she nods and he silently puts it on her. “its time love.” he whispered. Haymitch opened his arms for a hug, and was completely surprised when she kissed him. Her arms wrapped around his neck as his went around her waist and their lips moved together. The kiss was soft yet hard, desperate but held time still, passionate and loving. It summed up their feelings for each other as heat burned through them. He pulled away, resting his forehead on hers. “come home.” “I’ll try.” and with that, she walked into the tube and waved as she began to rise. Haymitch sighed and ran a hand through his hair before running to the mentors room to watch her and help how he could. Rosalie looked around the arena and smiled softly. It was beautiful. Fields full of flowers and trees surrounded them, brooks running through. There was so much water. No one would die from lack of water, which makes it painfully obvious; they were here to kill. This year would be a bloodbath. They would hunt each other like predator and prey. Everyone would be murdered or starved. Her eyes widened as the count down began and her eyes met Finnicks. He tilted his head right and she glanced to see trees, a lot of them. She knew he meant to wait for him there. She nodded and the two exchanged a small smile. As soon as the countdown began, she ran right, dodging a knife that came flying at her. She bent on her way and picked up a bag pack, before bending and picking up a... whip? Within moments she was in the trees and a few minutes later, Finnick joined her. Already, his clothes were stained scarlet. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Rosalie and Finnick ran from a group of three, the careers. Finnick turned ever so slightly and threw a knife. It struck a girl in the heart and she fell, a scream choking her. This time both turned and Rosalie lashed out with her whip. It caressed a boys cheek slightly before winding around his throat, she tugged and he fell to the floor, trying to pull off the whip as he choked. A moment later, the fight left him. “ROSIE!” Finnick shouted, and she turned to him in time for a sword to to pierce her. A gasp fell from her lips and a tear left her eye as she looked at her stomach. Finnick stabbed the boy he was fighting with his trident, before pulling it back and throwing it at the owner of the sword. Instantly the girl fell, and with nothing holding her up, Rosalie began to fall also. Finnick caught her. He pulled the sword from her back, tears gathering in his eyes. It was stupid, he knew one of them would have to die, but he didnt think it would be now. And he was planning on trying his best not to let it be her. He stroked her face. Finnick you have to win. I’ll try. no, Finnick! you have to win, for both of us! and just... give my necklace to Haymitch for me... tell Haymitch I’m sorry, that I tried. okay? tell him I love him. she whispered to him, as she smiled gently. I will. I promise. he murmured, tears falling down his cheeks. “I love you Rosie.. little sister.” I love you to big brother-” her eyes smiled happily at him, but it did not mask the pain as she began to cough. Her blood splattered against Finnicks chest as she choked slightly. Once she had finished she gasped painfully; “-goodbye Finnick goodbye darling. those were the final words she would ever hear as her body stiffened and her eyes glazed over. Finnick cried silently as he shut her eyes and layed her on the ground before taking off her necklace, and placing it around his neck. He kissed her forehead, gathered his supplies and stumbled away. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ I love you too. Haymitch whispered to the screen as he watched the light leave her eyes. He got up, about to leave the room, before walking to Mags and sighing. “Rosies gone, Brett’s gone and I want you to have their sponsor money. Keep him alive.” he muttered, before walking to his room and opening the strongest whiskey he could find. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ “congratulation Finnick.” Haymitch slurred as they shook hands. Finnick sighed and took of Rosalie’s necklace, before handing it to Haymitch who cradled it in his palm. “she really loved you Haymitch. I’m so sorry.” and then Finnick Odair walked away. Neither knew that in a few years from now a young couple named Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark would watch Rosalie’s death, would become friends with Finnick, would drag Haymitch out of his broken and drunken life to turn him into the mentor he once was, that the couple would ask about the necklace he always wore and would remind him how much Rosie loved him, before they figured it out, and named their second child after her before making Haymitch her godfather. Neither knew that the girl on fire would walk into their lives and remind them so much of Rosie, or that they would fight for both Katniss and the memory of the girl they both loved in separate ways. ~TA TheChosenOne
