Ong Cai Ping about imf.org/external/pubs/ft/issues/issues26/ This website is an organizational website which has lots of detailed reports and also, it is not managed by just one individual. The website tells people about those in rural poverty in developing countries. It has information, such as: who are the people that suffer from poverty, what these poor people own, how rural poverty is created and so on. After reading the information on the website, it made me realize that there are also cases of poverty happening in developed countries such as America. Rural poverty affects mostly women and children compared to men. This is because women have the lowest social status in most countries as compared to men. Hence they are the ones suffering from poverty the most. It was sad to know that there are countries whereby men and women’s social statuses have a huge difference, unlike Singapore-whereby everyone regardless of gender, age, nationality and culture are treated equally. In addition, not just women suffer the most from poverty but also cultivators and non-cultivators. One of the reasons why there is poverty is corrupt politicians who cause poverty because when there is corruption in a country, there will be political instability. And it’s not just the people living in that country who will lose confidence in the government, but also potential investors-and they might not want to invest in that country in the future. This will then cause poverty, as not just business will be affected, but also the country’s economy will be affected. Imagine if a country is full of corrupt politicians who dare to use money that could be used to invest in that country! Also, the poorer people will be affected badly, as big and rich companies might bribe the government to give them an unfair advantage in the economy/industry while the smaller companies might be forced to shut down. I personally feel that in order to reduce the growth of poverty; countries should try to make sure that there will not be any systemic discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or caste. If there is no system discrimination, everyone will be equal and there will be a lesser chance of people to fall into a state of poverty. Also, countries should ensure that there are no corrupt politicians in the country. I think that Singapore is successful in ensuring that there is a low poverty rate in the country. If you walk on the streets, you can hardly see any beggars, or poor children asking for food and money. The reason is because Singapore does not have systemic discrimination, instead, accepting people regardless of race, age, religion, nationality and so on. Also Singapore almost has no corrupt politicians; hence I personally feel that if a country has no systemic discrimination and corrupt politicians, there might be little or no poverty existing.
