Only 46 men have completed the 1000 day challenge since 1885. Tendai monks of Japan, Buddhist practitioners, sleeping only two hours a day, running up to 60kms a day in handmade shoes basically made of cloth. Tendai monks where white robes traditional head wear and carry a rope and a knife. The purpose of the rope and knife is that its required they take their own lives if they do not complete the 1000 days challenge, under no circumstances can they withdraw and are bound to strict and ritualistic practices that are designed to strengthen the mind, body and spirituality. They are considered saints to their people if they complete the mission and are pinnacles to the many around the world. The wondrous example of a tendai monk is that they are living testimonies of the human being, with faith and tradition, prayer and perseverance able to accomplish extraordinary achievements completely devoted to the matters of spiritual devotion, neglecting the basic needs of the human being, an inspiration to say the least such a rare legacy in this present time.
