Only cotton flags will fly this year MYSORE: Voices of opposition against the use of plastic flags have been heard often, but this year citizens of the heritage city seem determined to hoist only cotton flags. The sense of patriotism surrounding Independence Day makes people buy flags and flaunt it proudly. But by the end of the day, most of these plastic flags are seen lying around on the roads. The act of throwing away the national flag is in itself disrespectful, but also the use of plastic flags is against the government diktat that made cotton flags mandatory. But the good news this year that even shopkeepers, who earlier sold plastic flags, have taken a pledge to sell only cotton ones. Anand S, the owner of SMB enterprises at Ballal Circle, says: "First we have to show respect to the nation. If plastic national flags are sold, children will buy them and throw they away with ease. Apart from disrespecting the flag, this is also not good for the environment. We are therefore trying to make customers aware about not using plastic national flags." Govindarao Government School physical teacher B B Rekha, says: "For the past two to three years, we have been trying our best to ban plastic national flags. We have also advised students not to bring such flags." The school has arranged for students being provided with cloth flags at the time of march past or parade. Sayed, a class VIII student, said: "The school has restricted the use of plastic flag, so we are not buying such flags." Government Tamil Medium School head master, H Raju, said: "We banned the use of plastic national flags in our school three years ago. We have asked students not to purchase such flags and even advised their parents against buying these flags." Deputy commissioner C Shikha told TOI that that the district administration had instructed schools to use only cloth flags and had also directed the commissioner of Mysore City Corporation to ensure that plastic flags are not sold in the city.
