Only just realised that it was in 1974 that the government changed - TopicsExpress

Only just realised that it was in 1974 that the government changed the boundaries in this country. So we lost counties and villages, towns and cities became part of different counties. What a cockup they made of it too. On the local news just now they have said that Royal Mail say that as long as you put the post code and the name of the village/town/city in the address you can still use the original name of the county. So you can still put Westmoreland, Rutland, Ridings of Yorkshire, etc in addresses. Heres the list of historical counties: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historic_counties_of_England en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Government_Act_1972
