#OnlyInDanville Fact of the Week: Danville is home to the Noblis Center for Applied High Performance Computing (CAHPC). CAHPC is home to the Cray XMT2, the latest generation XMT and the only XMT supercomputer in the U.S. outside of a federal or academic setting. CAHPC allows companies convenient access to a supercomputer to solve advanced, real-world problems involving large amounts of data. This access to a supercomputer is unprecedented outside of federal or academic setting and removes the cost barrier to entry for smaller Virginia businesses. It is also involved with big data projects, such as a dark web investigation into bitcoin use. It was a federal client that wanted to investigate the new currency. The Danville facility recently developed BioVelocity, a DNA analysis tool. The equipment cuts the lengthy post-sequencing analysis of DNA to less than 15 minutes — or 100 times faster than the leading competitor. It can handle more raw material and is lower cost. Noblis and their 16 employees at the Danville facility are a strong asset to the #DanvilleVA region.
