Onwards after the thermals. Incidentally, Kate & Stuart didnt miss out on the hot pools, they were given vouchers to use the public pools which they reported as being very attractive and no one there, unlike at the weekend when theyre very busy indeed as we saw on Sunday night. Finally we arrived at Salento, a small town in the coffee area. The main square has 2 storey Spanish colonial style buildings all round it, painted in a mix of vibrant colours. Very charming. We liked it immediately. Glossing over the shortcomings of our driver (who was supposed to be a guide but wasnt really) we eventually found somewhere to stay which was reasonably priced and in town. Senora Lucy runs La Posada El Mirador as a tight ship. Not a spot of dirt is allowed and evidently she has green fingers as the courtyard, surrounded by about 8 rooms, has beautiful hanging pots, flower pots and beds. We had a gorgeous view over the valley too and the only noise was from the rooster in the morning and the geese as they were being fed next door , about 9am. We stayed here several nights and made use of the time by doing the Corocoa valley trek which is a 7 hour trek along the valley, through the cloud forest and up to the humming bird house, down again and up again to a place which is being restored as a tourist destination to explain the ecology of the area. (There is a road to it we discovered which is much easier and we returned via this route). We saw tiny, fluttering humming birds and added to our list of other birds spotted. There are also those tall, elegant wax palms here which loomed at us out of the clouds, looking mysterious and graceful.
