While the former takes their traditional rulers seriously, we dont in Igboland. Check out the pedigree of Northern Emirs...most of them have first class education and are highly exposed. The Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar was until his appointment as Sultan, Nigerias military attaché to Pakistan and has had a distinguished military career as a member of the Diplomatic Corps. Check out Sanusi now. Son of a former diplomat and Nigerias immediate past top banker. No wonder the Emirs are taken seriously. Even the Yorubas are better...their Obas are top guys...and people who have distinguished themselves in public service. No wonder President Jonathan had to personally attend the birthday of the Olubadan of Ibadan. Is it the Oba of Benin? Check out his credentials. His first son and Crown Prince was Nigerias immediate past Ambassador to Italy and the EU. No wonder government takes them seriously. Ok...welcome to Igboland.... Apart from the Obi of Onitsha and a few others, the majority of the traditional rulers in Igbo land are charlatans. Most of them are retired fraudsters even. I think it is worst in Abia State. Former Governor Orji Kalu turned the creation of New Ezes into a bazaar as all manner of people became Ezes. Step into any major market in Aba, you will see traditional rulers, decked with their regalia sitting down in their shops and asking you to come and buy their wares. This is true. I remember my practice days at Aba. I nearly knocked down one Eze along Aba-Owerri Road. He was on an Okada and waving his Ezeship fan. Nonsense
