Ooh! Ive come across this article several times now. Was this written as a means of discouraging people genuinely appalled by the Israeli government and Israeli military from joining the movement that says: enough is enough? True, there are lots of Israeli-associated products that are used so widely that it may be impossible to avoid all of them. And true, so many important things are produced by Israeli industries. Many in factories built on land illegally claimed from the indigenous people of Palestine. Does this excuse the decades of oppression, the wanton and indiscriminate bloodshed, the current inexcusable mass murder in Gaza? You decide. If we really want to show solidarity with the oppressed, and if we want to make a personal statement, we can start small. Read about BDS. Stop buying the products you can afford to boycott. There are clean alternatives - find them. You dont have to omit everything overnight. Little by little, it will make a difference. There are several reports that attest to this. Secular companies and governments have participated. Churches have divested. Palestinian churches have called for boycotts for some time now. Conscientious Jews and Israelis themselves have called for it. I may not be able to do anything about my computer, but I have sold my shares of Intel, Starbucks and Disney. And we wont be patronizing Disneyland anytime soon. At least we are doing something, even if it is something small. Dont forget the analogy of the matchstick. Or the fingers making a fist.
