Oops. Days almost over and I need to make an observation based on a news story on this mornings teevee: My parents apparently practiced Free Range Parenting, since we never got a ride to the park. Or anywhere. And they followed up on that by not attending our games, track meets, plays, performances. And I wasnt pissed, believe me. I was relieved. And we were never on the porch or in the yard or even on the block half the time. We were chased by dogs, bullied by bigger kids and learned coping skills and avoidance techniques; we were bitten by snakes to see if they were poisonous (seriously), played tag on the dam, had crayfish battles and swam in the river and built forts and treehouses, took five mile hikes with a peanut butter sandwich, jack knife, rope and maybe a 16 ox RC Cola. And we rode our bikes without lights or helmets. And things didnt start breaking until much, much later. Come to think of it, Free Range is an exaggeration. No Range, maybe. We were feral.
