Oops I missed FRIDAY FACT so this is SATURDAYS STATEMENT - Rose Cottage located in Rose Street, Wilberforce is believed to be the oldest timber building surviving in Australia. Thomas Rose and his wife Jane were amongst the first pioneering free settlers who arrived in the colony as free settlers in 1793. Accompanying their parents from Dorset on the “Bellona” and arriving in Sydney in 1793 were Thomas, Mary, Joshua and Richard. Several other children were born in the colony. The family were originally granted land at Liberty Plains in the Concord district. Thomas purchased the land on the banks of the Hawkesbury River in 1809 and between about 1811 and 1816, built the vernacular (slab) cottage and farmed the surrounding property. Jane died in 1827 and Thomas in 1833. Several generations of the Rose family resided in the cottage until the early 1960s, hence the name. The cottage was sold and eventually became the property of Hawkesbury Council but was returned to the Rose Family Society for a peppercorn in 1993. It is possible to visit Rose Cottage as part of the Australiana Pioneer Village experience theaustralianapioneervillage.au/
