Oops. Yesterday got away from me. So, Character Spotlight one day late!! Masrekah (mas-REH-kah) was another of those characters (like Rab and Sorek) who were never intended to do or be much. As the story has progressed, he too has become a bigger player in it. Which I love, of course. Anyway. He is 30, 5’11, and has blonde hair and blue eyes. He was born in the town book one takes place in and is one of the H-guy town Lords. He has been on his own since he was 17. Several years prior to the start of the story, he tried to marry Rab (she was almost 15; girls marry young in my story-world). But when he refused to take Ari with them to get her away from their abusive mother, Rab refused to marry him. Humiliated and affronted, he sort of assaulted her (part of the reason she has a fear of men) and also viciously spread rumors about her among the men in town, H-guy and non-H-guy alike. He basically made it so no one would marry her – or could marry her, since H-guys oversee all weddings. Kind of a thing of, “If I can’t have you, no one will.” In the years following that incident, he rose aggressively through the ranks. He isn’t the highest official, but he’s right up there, and he has immense sway with the main town Lord. Dangerous sway. Personality-wise, he is intensely vindictive, manipulative, pragmatic, and driven. He is one of the driving forces behind the hunt for the rebel group, and will soon become the main force. He calls for a lockdown of the town and brutally enforces it. Actually, everything he does is brutal. He is relatively fearless and he truly believes he is doing the right thing, even if his methods are a bit unconventional and heartless. He firmly believes the end justifies the means, or perhaps that’s just what he tells himself so he can sleep at night. Rab believes he still nurses a grudge for her; time will tell how true that is. Aaand…I honestly can’t say much more without lots of spoilers. So…that is all! =)
