This seminar will cover everything (or almost) you ever wanted to know about scent and scent processing in dogs. From perception of scent, to fluid dynamics and obviously training perspectives. We will discuss the olfactory world of dogs, the neuroscience of scent, olfactory learning and applied scent work. Discussed applications will be based on the two main areas of research of the Canid Behaviour Research Lab: Biomedical, Environmental (species-at-risk and invasive species detection and search). We will discuss the challenges of scent training for expert dogs and handlers, in particular the challenges of working in a sensory modality that we, humans, do not understand and grasp fully. We will also discuss some of the concepts and theories discussed in Gadbois & Reeve, 2014 (in Horowitz, 2014): Dopamine dogs, activating the wanting/SEEKING system, the where, what and how much systems, the fundamental processes in scent work (detection, discrimination, identification, search, etc.), and specific techniques and approaches to train dogs. Scent work as a recreational hobby for you and your dog will also be discussed. We will wrap-up by discussing affordance training, a non-obtrusive way of training scent detection and discrimination that requires flexibility on the part of the trainer/handler and context, and less focus on modifying the behaviour of the dog: This approach will also get us to explore the use of natural behaviour patterns and classical conditioning in scent training.
