Open Access button is a marker in the Internet browser that allows us to report sites that deny us access to certain documents. It is a method to make visible this big problem but is also a way to contribute to the Open Access movement. It is common that during our search for pages and websites, suddenly give a scholarly article that appears to contain just what we are looking for, until then everything is going great, we click on the link that redirects us to a library, the site of an educational institution or another hosting service. The problem begins when we need to download the file to have a registered user to identify which are members of the institution, or when we need to make a payment by downloading the article. OA Button (Open Access button) The initiative of Open Access Button was born, thanks to two college students worried about those users, students or researchers who do not have the resources needed to pay for magazine subscriptions and therefore do not have access to the information they require. They came to create a web tool that could record the times when someone is denied access to a document, also recording some personal information such as nationality, profession and the contents of the selected fields. This would be reflected in real time on a map that would make the problem visible to everyone. How does it work? Open Access button is merely a marker in your browser. Although you can also download the application for Firefox, Chrome and Android, and after that you must press the button next time you are asked to pay for access to an academic journal. Generally journal publications that require subscriptions can also be found hosted on other servers but often tend to be lower quality files or previous versions of the final document. The button allows open access to find these files from other repositories to access them for free. If not able to find any free copy of the document, the development team’s mission is to make one. Although it is not an easy task, the team contacted the author of the publication to request a copy, after which host the files pages and quickly shared among all those who need it are created. The creators of this tool are aware that the button itself will fail to change the current restrictive practices but is a way to help build change. No one should pay for access to knowledge. If you also want to put your two cents, this is your chance, it will not cost more than a click and that click is perhaps that makes a difference in the future.
