Open Letter From CSP, Inc. Director, Karen Synesiou to the Mental Health Professional Group (MHPG) of ASRM Dear Colleagues, With the documentary: Breeders and the seminar in Ottowa entitled: Bodies for Sale, I would like to see the MHPG weigh in on the effects these kinds of seminars and documentaries have on the psyche of children born through surrogacy. While I know there is a right of Freedom of Speech in this great country, we need to balance this against the effects of these negative labels on thousands of children. I would like to see a discussion of this topic at ASRM and perhaps a paper that discusses these labels and the children born from the field of surrogacy. There is a difference between discussing whether surrogacy should be legal or is oppressive to women and whether compensated surrogacy is legit versus blatantly creating bias labels that may follow the children. I am asking for assistance from everyone in beginning the conversation. It is my opinion that the line of free speech is being crossed and harm is being caused to the children born from surrogacy. Labels are not placed on children born from other means or children of adoption, single parents or being raised by grandparents or family members. While I understand the point is to label the process or the surrogate mother, the ultimate conclusion is that these labels affect the children as well. Sincerely Yours, Karen Synesiou Director/CFO Center for Surrogate Parenting, Inc. creatingfamilies
