Open Letter and Statement regarding Mayor DeBlasio and PBA leader Pat Lynch most recent comments on police killings and the suspension of protests, We are Occupy Wall Streets Occu-Evolve group (one of the longest running in OWS). Usually, we do not seek to speak for a movement that once was, we feel it is important to communicate now.. That being said we wholeheartedly condemn the policy and leadership behind overaggressive and oppressive policing that is led by Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and PBA President Pat Lynch. It is the culture that they promote which ultimately led to the recent killings of two officers in Brooklyn. It also affects countless black, brown, and other oppressed groups in this city and everywhere else the culture and practice of broken windows and system of colonial control of black and brown communities exist. We also condemn state owned and police linked prosecutors who almost always vilify the murder victims of the police rather than seeking indictment against those that murder the, While it is not acceptable to mock death, unlike the three smiling police officer supporters wearing I CAN BREATHE T-shirts. we call on families of the slain officers to join us in demanding that Bill Bratton and Pat Lynch step down from their misleadership positions, and the policy of broken windows. We demand that the over aggressive and militarized police presence in our community ends. Only when this happens can human life be preserved. That being said we also dont condone violence in our movement and have never given directives for it, as this individual was not apart of our movement. However, his actions are being used as a pretext to attack our movement and constitutional rights to free speech and assembly. As far as the call to suspend protests we say no and will respect any call from any group to exercise their first amendment rights to protest and free assembly and although our primary role in most action is outreach and education we will join any action that promotes that justice for Eric Garner, Akai Gurley and any family/community fighting for justice. While we can respect calls for calm and mourning, in the future any calls for a suspension in our protests will only be agreed to when our demands are taken seriously and acted upon. .
