Open Letter to the Community of DeSoto County: I recently had the opportunity to apply for, be offered, and accept a position as Superintendent of a the City of Cape Coral Charter school system. The acceptance of this position is an opportunity to reach my career goal of becoming a school system superintendent and to work in a very progressive charter school system. I have thoroughly enjoyed the time that I have spent in DeSoto County. I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work for the School District of DeSoto County in a community that is so rich in tradition and people. During my tenure I would like to commend Dr. Karyn Gary for being a mentor and for providing every resource requested to make DeSoto County High School a better environment for our students and community. The results of her support can be observed in the physical environment of campus. New paint inside and out, landscaping improvements, and overall campus beautification are some of the visible improvements. More important are the additions to the curriculum side of school to include supporting after-school tutoring, A.V.I.D. College and Career Readiness program, and a bolstering of the Career and Technical program offerings to align our students to the careers of the future. I will always appreciate and never forget the relationships that I have developed during my time working for the School District of DeSoto County. I have every confidence that the system is heading in an upward trend and I expect to hear great things about the School District of DeSoto County in the future. To the staff at DeSoto County High School I can ensure you that we have a seamless transition in place for leadership. I know that you will continue to do the great things that you are doing and I will forever be indebted to you for your kindness and willingness to always look out for what is in the best interest of your students. Sincerely, Nelson Stephenson
