Open Letter to those insulting the ANC and its structures “We must rise against injustice – a lesson from Cde Kgalema Motlanthe”! Dear “Mr and Mrs Insults”, “In fact, it is a measure of one’s political consciousness to know how to fight against injustice consistently, even when it is visited upon the people you dislike most. If it is an injustice, you must rise against it, because if you try to fight injustice selectively and that when it happens to those you dislike and you face the other way, it will visit those very close to you and those that you like most and perhaps even yourself.” (Kgalema Motlanthe). I have learned early on in my ‘political-activist-life’ that disagreeing with someone is NOT a free passport to INSULT them with impunity – that is an injustice; rather engage them in a debate and persuade than insulting – maybe they will end up agreeing with you – ATTITUDE and APPROACH determine everything. Actually those who insult others in most instances are either messengers (‘paid to do the job’) or at worse people with very low self-esteem and who are unable to debate issues. Insulting the ANC and its leadership (including other structures like ANCYL NTT, ANCWL, COSATU or SACP) / or other formations in our national life without engaging them first is REACTIONARY AND NOT PROGRESSIVE – it is NOT part of the solution. The ANC is NOT about individual leaders (e.g. Jacob Zuma, Gwede Mantashe, NEC, PEC, or REC - their positions are temporary) it is actually our (members, followers, fans and supporters) collective heritage and inheritance; which must be bequeathed to our children just as we found it intact and united. Therefore, ANC members and or non-members (mostly supporters and followers) must be careful when hurling insults. It is actually UN-comradely to treat others with gross insensitivity, insolence and contemptuous rudeness – and expect that nothing will happen to you. When a person (member or non-member) insults the ANC leadership, they are unconsciously insulting its entire membership and in return, they must never complain when the very same membership decides to retaliate – “giving them a taste of their medicine”. The fact of the matter is that the ANC leadership or its structures cannot be put perpetually under siege by PURE REACTIONARIES and in return expect members to stand by the way side any watch - at one point ANC members are going to respond and retaliate to your insults and your unjust behaviour and conduct - so be careful! In summary, everyone who insult the other must equally expect the same treatment when is directed at them, wrongly or rightly. So be WARNED, members of the ANC and the entirety of the Alliance are watching you and noting your insults; expect their response – it might take time but it is surely coming! As Kgalema Motlanthe said: “In fact, it is a measure of one’s political consciousness to know how to fight against injustice consistently, even when it is visited upon the people you dislike most. If it is an injustice you must rise against it because if you try to fight injustice selectively and that when it happens to those you dislike and you face the other way, it will visit those very close to you and those that you like most and perhaps even yourself.” Yours Sincerely, Kgoshi Maepa (Member of the ANC)
