Open forum Friday and that damn American Flag . In honor of this Sunday ,(I will leave it up to you to figure out what that day is all about ) A posting shared by a Teacher about his class this country and that damn flag , Chuck Slay Ill re-post but first I want to say that every single day of my 40 year career, I led my kids in the Pledge. We always did it second period. I got so tired of making the kids do it, that I adopted the policy of saying, When I say, Its time for the Pledge of Allegiance the last person to stand must come to the front of the class lead the rest of us by saying, Ladies and gentleman, please stand and join me in the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. It worked like a charm. THEY HATED COMING TO THE FRONT OF THE CLASS. In fact, one day I was being evaluated by my Vice-Principal during second period and I said, Please stand and , , , and before I was finished the kids were climbing all over themselves trying to be the first to stand up. I got a note on my evaluation that said, Instills a clear sense of patriotism in his students. Side story. I had two Mexican girls (Im not saying Hispanic, because they made it clear they were Mexican during class) who chatted and were disrespectful during the pledge and even refused to stand. One morning, I took them outside during a quiet study period after the pledge so as not to disrespect them in front of their peers and asked simply if they could please just stand, or if they chose to sit, do so quietly. They both looked at me, and almost simultaneously said, This isnt OUR country. (as a side note, the Educational Code requires teachers to say the Pledge). I asked them to go to the office. I got a nasty note from my African American female principal stating that I was :culturally insensitive to the needs of [your] minority students. I countered with, The State pays about $12,000 for each of them to attend our school a year. Cant they be expected to be somewhat respectful of that. My simple note turned into a formal reprimand written my female African American principal. I almost gave up saying the Pledge and was told many times that I was the only teacher who made us say that crap. I told them I was doing my job. Plus I actually admitted to loving the country that allowed me to be their teacher ..
