Open house sign rules are frequently disobeyed WASHINGTON – Aug. 13, 2014 – Many real estate agents arent aware that some cities, counties and other jurisdictional bodies impose restrictions on off-site open house directional signs. These sign ordinances might prohibit them on public property or allow them only on some parts of public property. They could limit the amount of time a sign may be legally posted or restrict the number of signs advertising an event. Still, some agents knowingly violate the rules because they local enforcement is lax; and when that happens, other agents follow their lead. However, many local sign ordinances are the result of a compromise negotiated between the real estate community and local officials. As a result, ethically challenged agents could prompt a new groundswell of community protest that leads to even harsher ordinances. If the real estate community was a key participant in the initial round of sign rule discussions, it will work against them if agents dont follow the rules their profession helped create. Consequently, they may not even be invited to a second round of discussions if theyre seen a part of the problem rather than part of the solution.
