Open letter to Robin Williams and his Family. Dear Robin, Almost no news of a celebrities death phases me. Of course when any human being is lost it is cause for sadness, but in the absence of a personal association, there isnt a sense of grief. Youre different, Robin. I mourn your loss. When I think of you, I think of the joy you brought through your stand up. Your manic free wheeling act that had more energy than a power plant. I think of all the great movies you added so much to. Toys, What Dreams May Come, Patch Adams, The Fisher King, Good Morning Vietnam. So many more. But one, Robin, one above all others. Its is a movie I still havent watched, but I have heard most of. I was much younger than I am today, and my dad was dying of cancer. One night the pain was too much for him to sleep. He walked into the den, sat down and started watching TV. The World According to Garp was on. I sat with him as he watched your movie, but I didnt glance at the screen. I was too busy either looking at my dad or down at my feet. I remember him chuckling a little at one point and looking up to see a small plane that had crashed into house. I dont remember the punch line. I just remember watching my dad watching your movie. It was the last quiet time I had with him before he died. So thank you Robin for giving a dying man an escape or a distraction at least. And maybe one day Ill watch that movie of yours and have a chuckle at that scene myself. A fan for a lot of reasons who wishes you were still with us, Billy White
