Open the books WITH all due respect to this current government and all the good things it has done to gain popularity in moving Fiji forward, the recent dissolution of the Public Accounts Committee is a stupid move (FT 15/3). The Prime Minister is reminding Fijians that we are no longer stupid and it is one aim of this government to make Fiji a clever and wiser nation. The government has been preaching transparency and accountability and we have read of cases of people in authority who have been charged and some jailed for abuse of authority and misappropriation of funds. As a Christian, all churches require their treasurers to give regular reports of how their church funds are being used. Likewise, the government should do the right thing as in the last five years, government accounts and the Auditor-Generals report have not been published. A good leader will be transparent and accountable, will call a spade a spade and will seek forgiveness for any mistakes done as no one is perfect and keep moving forward. Dissolving the Public Accounts Committee seems to relay the message that this government does not want Fijians to know the truth of its financial affairs. SAVENACA VAKALIWALIWA Nasinu
