Opens with enough visceral violence and debauchery so familiar - TopicsExpress

Opens with enough visceral violence and debauchery so familiar that one could almost taste the fear, nonsensical hate and extremist aggression, but veers away into a rather clumsy crime drama, and ending with a finale in suspension of belief. Something like a Hollywood movie that starts off trying to be heavy and then decides to slip into sensational lightness. Where the character development stops just at the edges of diving into deeper, darker, truer waters, and the grand reflection of reality obscured by the veil of fast-paced fiction right at the moment when one catches a small glimpse of the Malaysian condition. An entertaining read. Just dont expect an insightful, piercing social commentary.
