Opera neophytes are often flummoxed when soprano characters with respiratory insufficiency sing like larks (Violetta, Desdemona). On the other end of the spectrum are operas like Rusalka (which Im watching right now), where the soprano is rendered mute for much of the opera, yet has to remain center stage since shes the center of the drama. Such situations put the audience at severe risk for a breakout of ballet. The CDC has to yet to find a cure for ballet-infected opera unfortunately.
