Operation Doggy Mush successful, so far. To fully explain what Dante is on, he is taking Atopica to suppress his immune systems response (which is causing white cells to attack red cells). Next he is taking PrednisoLone (which is not actually Prednisone, but what Prednisone turns into when processed by the liver), to help his bone marrow produce new red blood cells. He is also taking an antibiotic, Zeniquin (thankfully only for one more day - maybe that will lessen the nausea) and Omeprazole, which is similar to Prilosec, to help the stomach acid caused by the PrednisoLone. You can kind of liken his regimen to what Chemo does to a human. Where you can reason with a human and tell them they simply HAVE to eat to keep their strength up, reasoning with a dog does you no good and simply frustrates the dog. :) He is initially interested in food, but its almost like right after that his stomach lurches and says no effing way, dude! so he wont eat. We have tried beef (raw and cooked), boiled chicken, rice, cheese, hot dogs, baby Graduates turkey sticks (he did eat 2 of those yesterday, Kathy, so thank you for the idea), salmon, various soft and solid dog foods, bacon, ham, pasta, egg, hamburger. Some of the stuff, he would eat early on, or eat a small amount of, but at this point hes stopped eating pretty much all of it. Hell take some in his mouth and then drop it, but most he just turns his nose up at. This morning he really attacked a bowl of Pedigree Country Stew, but only got a few bites in before he just couldnt do any more. That right there told me he was really hungry, just unable to force himself to eat. So, about half an hour ago, he got a couple basters full of a mush mixture of: Pedigree Country Stew, half a hot dog, a small handful of spinach, some frozen green beans and some rice, steamed with homemade chicken broth. I threw it in a food processor with some water and then we spent about 10 minutes giving him a squeeze at a time in his mouth, then let him rest between attacks. Toward the end he wasnt fighting me as hard, and he didnt hack anything up, spit it out, and so far has not thrown anything up. Were hoping getting some of this in his stomach will not only help him not be quite as sick, but also help give his body the nutrients it needs to fight this battle better. Its sad seeing him so weak. All we can do is do our best to make sure he has what he needs to fight this fight, and remind him how much we love him as much as possible.
