Operation FLAX Operation Flax is the code name for a series of coordinated actions by the command of WDAF (Western Desert Air Force) and the USAF command in North Africa during World War II, in order to revitalize the air transport system of the ‘axis to supply the troops operating in Tunisia. Taken April 5, 1943 ended in early May, with the end of the German-Italian resistance in Tunisia. Inexperienced pilots from the 1st, 14th, and newly arrived 82nd FGs were initially badly mauled by the Bf-109 Gs and FW-190 A in service and newly sent with many veteran pilots to Tunisia. The reasons were a suceptability to fire and a poor roll rate in the P-38 F5 and G types of these American units. The P-38s had major successes in the Shootdown of several Me-323 Gigant, Ju-87 B Stukas, and Ju-52.
