Operation Gladio: CIA Terrorism in Italy - Peteano, Italy - March 31, 1972: A car bomb explodes and kills three military policemen. Left-wing extremist group The Red Brigade is blamed for the terrorist attack. The police rounded up 200 Communists. 1984: Judge Felice Casson discovers there was no police investigation into the Pateano bombing. He finds that the police gave false evidence to convict Communists. His investigation leads him to arrest neo-fascist Vincenzo Vinciguerra. Vinciguerra confesses to carrying out the Peteano attack and says he was helped by the Italian Secret Service. Vinciguerra says he used explosives provided by a secret army, called Gladio. He also testifies that the police and secret services protected the men behind the Bologna train bombing which killed 85 people in 1980. October 24, 1990: Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti publicly reveals the existence of operation Gladio. He says America and Britain set up Gladio after World War II as an underground army to fight off any Soviet invasion. June 10, 1992: the BBC interviews Gladio leaders, who reveal that Gladio carried out terrorist attacks and framed Communists for the crimes so that Italian voters would keep the right wing government in power. They also claim that the CIA attended Gladio meetings, paid Gladio agents salaries, and even supplied explosives. CIA denies any connection with operation Gladio.
