Operation Storm began on August 4, 1995, in the context of many years of tension between Serbs and Croats in the Krajina region. Implemented by Croatian forces to re-take territory in Krajina, a part of Croatia that had been self proclaimed as the Republic of Serbian Krajina, it resulted in the exodus of the Serb civilian population from the area. The Tribunal established that a number of crimes against Serb civilians were committed by the Croatian forces, including the murder of several elderly villagers in the hamlet of Grubori on 25 August 1995. Ante Gotovina, Mladen Markač and Ivan Cermak were indicted, tried and acquitted for their actions during Operation Storm.
