Operation URGENT FURY: On 21 October 1983, the 160th received notice to prepare for Grenada to perform the mission of clandestine infiltration and exfiltration of Special Operations Forces personnel into hostile locations. President Reagan had authorized military action to direct a noncombatant evacuation operation and the restoration of a more mainstream government in Grenada. The 3 primary objectives for the 160th were: -Richmond Hill Prison, where MH-60 Black Hawks attempted to insert SOF personnel in order to seize the prison. Forced to attempt the operation in daylight, the MH-60s were shot up by ground fire and had to abort, landing on U.S. Naval ships to offload the wounded. -Governor-General’s Mansion, where MH-60s inserted a team of SOF for an assault on the mansion. -Radio/TV Station, where MH-60s inserted SOF personnel to seize a strategically important radio transmitter on the west coast of Grenada. Despite hasty planning and inadequate and misleading intelligence, the 160th successfully completed its mission in the face of a heavily armed Cuban and Grenadian force, continuing the motto “Night Stalkers Don’t Quit.”
