Opinion: Hey BBC, lose the embelished hype: Like a lot of you I’ve been watching all the specials along with the episodes. It’s been fun to see ‘The Science of Doctor Who’; ‘The Women of Doctor Who’; and “An Adventure in Space and Time’. Along with those have been those delightful efforts by Peter Davison to find the Ultimate Doctor and the Ultimate Companion. Good stuff all and all. However..... In the effort to hype the premier of the new Doctor they went a bridge too far with one bit in the Davison special on the Ultimate Companion. The writers had Peter remark on the challenge faced by Jenna Louise Coleman as an actress while managing the transition of Clara from Matt’s youngest and personable Doctor to Peter’s older and “less user friendly Doctor”. Coming to the conclusion that this was greatest challenge faced by any actress as a companion. Say what ? Are we rewriting history ? Did we forget about the exquisite acting and magical presence of Elisabeth Sladen as she coped with the transition from the Paternalistic Dandy portrayed by Jon Pertwee to the totally alien and somewhat mad Tom Baker ? Did we forget about the absolutely superb transition by Billie Piper as she handled the magnificently dark and severely alien Christopher Eccleston turning into the personable and troubled David Tennant as the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with ? Jenna needs no hype as Clara. She is a brilliant actress. I can see why Moffat gave her his blessing. No further hype is needed. She did exceedingly well with Matt. And it seems she’ll be really on her game with Peter. I understand the need to bring new fans up to speed with such specials. And I don’t blame the BBC for running them. But let’s not forget what has been. The Doctor certainly doesn’t. - David
