Oportunidad para participar en 8th Annual, regional "NYC Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute" Dear Students, Educators, and Community Leaders: For those who have not seen our earlier emails, the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) is still accepting applications from NYC area students to attend its upcoming 8th annual, regional "NYC Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute", to be held August 14—20, 2013, at parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other environmental sites in and around New York City. Interested students should apply promptly as slots are going fast. The NYC Institute is an intensive, residential, science-based, 8 day long environmental education and environmental career program for top students, aged 16-19, competitively selected from across the NYC area. NOTE: students in high school and college are eligible. Through a full scholarship, NHEC will cover ALL costs for accepted students, including housing, meals, books, science equipment, and more. Students will be housed at the Navy Lodge (a hotel) located at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, the headquarters for Gateway National Park, with classes also held at Gateway. Utilizing an Environmental STEM curriculum, students will learn about a wide range of environmental and natural resource issues, as well as conduct field studies (testing air, water, soil, plus biological assessments, birding, and more) using professional-grade environmental science equipment, taught by NHEC’s experienced instructors and other environmental professionals. Our 8th annual regional NYC Institute is being funded by the U.S. Forest Service—Eastern Region, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Students will also learn about federal internship and youth jobs with these agencies, and how to apply for these in 2013 and beyond. Our federal sponsors are actively seeking to recruit talented, motivated students, especially youth of color, to come work for them now and in the future. So if you are a student, enjoy science, love the environment, AND want a job in this field, this program is for you. The attached pdf files contain all materials necessary for a student to apply to the Institute. Please read the "Fact Sheet" first, as it contains key information. Regarding applying -- some standard questions and answers: First, there is no “deadline” per se. NHEC selects students on a rolling basis and as applications are received; some selections have already been made. But we do have slots left. Students are strongly urged to apply as soon as possible as earlier applicants have a greater chance of acceptance. NHEC will continue to accept applications until all openings are filled. Second, you may scan and email your application to NHEC. Send it to [email protected] and to [email protected] Upon receipt we will review your application, make a decision, and contact you further. We also ask that you forward on this email to those you think would be interested in this exciting program, including qualified students, educators, high schools, colleges, youth organizations, and more. We appreciate your help. Our apologies for cross-postings. Please contact NHEC, especially our Programs Coordinator, Juan Rodriguez, at [email protected] for further questions. Or call NHEC at 703-683-3956. To view photos of past NHEC Institutes, including our NYC, NM, and CA ones, please visit our website at nheec1.org Thank you.
