Opponents of Judy Chus attempt to bypass the legislative process and get President Barack Obama to declare the San Gabriel Mountains as a National Monument will stage a rally Monday, Oct. 6. The rally is scheduled for 2 p.m. outside the Pasadena field office for Chu (D-27th), 527 South Lake Avenue. Opponents will reportedly hand deliver letters of opposition to Chus staff and will also speak out against the plan during a media event, according to Glendora Mayor Judy Nelsons official website. Opponents worry why Chu is trying to fast track the process by asking Obama to declare National Monument status with his Executive powers and also worry about the further federalization of local lands. Chus original bill, HR 4858, is currently sitting in a Congressional subcommittee. Chu grew frustrated with the progression of the bill through Congress. Organizers of the rally said Obama could make this a reality as early as this month. Organizations in opposition to Chus plans include the Glendora Community Conservancy, Mt. Baldy Lodge, the San Gabriel Valley Regional Conservancy and the California Tail Users Coalition among others.. —Aaron C.
