Opponents of the Common Core State Standards will host this month - TopicsExpress

Opponents of the Common Core State Standards will host this month speaking engagements across Alabama and Florida in an ongoing campaign to unseat the national curriculum standards adopted by both states. Stand in the Gap: Why Citizens Must Defeat Common Core is series of free events sponsored by a host of conservative and Tea Party groups opposed to the standards. In an announcement, they called the standards an untested, top-down, one-size-fits-all federal initiative. If the fundamentals of math taught in the 1940s and 1950s were good enough to put a man on the moon, why do we throw them out in favor of an unproven method that is confusing to children and parents alike? they asked. As evidence, they say the only English language arts expert and the only math expert involved in the project were Sandra Stotsky and James Milgram and both refused to sign off on the standards. Speakers for the series include former Oklahoma Secretary of Education Linda Murphy, who helped repeal the standards in her home state, Italian journalist Lucca Bocci, head of international outreach for Tea Party Italia. The also include Troy Towns, a former businessman who promotes a Christian perspective of world politics, and Alice Linahan, a Texas mother who helped found the media consulting group Voices Empower and the nonprofit group Women on the Wall. al/news/montgomery/index.ssf/2014/09/common_core_opposition_groups.html
