Opportunity to host a veterinary student. Massachusetts - TopicsExpress

Opportunity to host a veterinary student. Massachusetts livestock industry relies on a strong veterinary infrastructure in order to continue to thrive. Please see the invitation below to participate in a program at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to host a veterinary student at your farm. Its a good way to help ensure that farmers have knowledgeable veterinarians in the future. The program is open to any farm in MA. You need not be in close proximity to the Cummings School: Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine has a required course for first year veterinary students called Adopt-A-Veterinary Student. The course director is Dr. Alfredo Sanchez from Tufts Ambulatory Service. It was created to give students, many of whom lack experience with all livestock species, an appreciation for the needs of farmers and to teach them a little bit about farm management. This is critical in getting them to understand they have a lot to learn about the business of farming in order to be effective as future veterinarians. We assign each student to a farm and they are required to spend at least 2 full days during the year working side by side with the farm owner or farm manager learning about livestock and farm management. We seek out farmers who like to teach students and who think it important to shape the careers of future veterinarians toward large animal practice, or at least to understand the challenges of farming in our region. Weve been requiring this course for about 25 years and over that time our database of participating farms has shrunk. We ask farmers to volunteer their time but they do get a bit of free labor from the students (and our gratitude) in return. The name of the course comes from the observation that many farmers follow the careers of young people theyve employed who went on to attend veterinary school. The course starts in the fall and we need to sign up new farmers now, have them fill out a questionnaire, and explain our expectations to them. We use all types of livestock operations, including stables and camelid raisers, and try to match each student with the type of livestock of which they have the least experience. If you are interested in hosting a student, please complete the form linked below and return it to Dr. Sanchez. If you have questions, please email Dr. Sanchez at [email protected]
