Opposition planning to discredit my govt – Dickson October 25, 2013 by Simon Utebor Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson says the opposition in the state has resorted to blackmail and propaganda to discredit his administration. Dickson spoke when he arrived in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Thursday, after his two weeks official trip to the United States. The governor, apparently making reference to a rumour that he was allegedly arrested in London with $50m during his trip, said he would not be deterred by the series of lies and false reports being churned out by the opposition. He said the focus of the present administration was to make the state respected among the comity of states. Dickson, who was received by notable indigenes of the state, including the Deputy Governor John Jonah, urged the people not to “fall into trap of despondency and lies being launched by opposition against his administration.” He said, “There are people we know, who had the opportunity to make a difference, but who could not and instead of joining hands with all of us to make our state safe and prosperous, they have resorted to blackmail and propaganda to create unnecessary tension. “But we know that as long as we are doing what is right, as long as we are serving with all honesty, God Almighty, being with us and with the support we are seeing, the state will continue to move from glory to glory. “Take your destiny in your hands; work with us as you are all doing so that we can make our state and the Ijaw nation a better place. Now your state is respected in the comity of states in this nation and outside the country. And, so this is not the time for our people to fall into the trap of despondency that detractors of this state always propound.” Speaking on the bilateral agreement between the state and the management of Lincoln University in the US, the governor said the first batch of beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme would be selected through an open and competitive process. He explained that the scholarship programme was aimed at building the human capacity of the state, urging Bayelsa people to avail themselves of the opportunities. He added that a similar programme would be established between the state government and a foremost university in the United Kingdom
