Opus Interview Today I post about the awesome rock group from Perth Western Australia named Opus. The four piece band includes: Shorn Duncan - Lead Vocals, Tyler Kemp – Bass, Jay Macleod - Drums/percussion, Solomon French – Guitars. These are all young boys who work very hard towards their passion of music and dedicate their time to almost every day of the week. I interview them asking numerous questions, here are their responses: Q1 - How did you guys form, when did you all come about and form Opus? Shorn: “Well after my first band sort of dissipated I got in touch with my old friend Jay from school and another friends cousin, Tyler. At this point we still had the old bassist Ned and we called the project ‘Velox Mortem’ or fast death in Latin, funnily enough it ended very quickly as Ned quit after one session, after which we changed back to the original band name ‘Opus’ and started playing the songs. We then hired Solomon whos only been with us for a few months”. Q2 – What type of genre would you class your band as? Who are your major influences? Shorn: “I like weird art rock, but everyone ignores that from me”. Jay: “I pretty much like all sorts of rock”. Tyler: “Well, I think we are still trying to discover what genre we really are but I can definitely say that we like to experiment with a wide range of sounds that inspire us I guess. Bands in particular include ‘The Ramones’, ‘Metallica’, ‘Greenday’, ‘Nirvana’, ‘Zeppelin’ and the list goes on and for me US punk like ‘Pennywise’ and ‘The Offspring’ really has opened music up for me”. Q3 – What are your song writing/recording processes? Where/how do you gain your inspiration during the processes? Shorn: “Well from a lyrical stand point I try to keep it very emotionally charged and I suppose that I draw inspiration from my everyday life. Although cartoons are also a huge inspiration during the writing process and a great way to survive the recording process as we each tend to turn into raving sadistic lunatics during said process”. Jay: “I guess ‘INXS’ are the only ones to inspire me to write my songs”. Tyler: “Well, I usually write the music side of it you know? Like the riff and a rough structure of the song then I hand it to Solomon, Shawn and jay to finalize the song with their awesomeness. Solomon is probably the best guitar player in the country right now so he usually makes all the awesome bridges you hear! (Shorn Responds): Yeah his (Solomon’s) guitar work is the stuff of legend; some say his licks are so tasty they can put a bull elephant to sleep”. Solomon: “When it comes to music writing well usually try to figure out a riff or something that sounds nice, and work around it. Well just start jamming to it and play whatever comes to our minds, and the end result is usually more natural or better than if we thought about it too much”. Q4 – What are your goals as a band? Where would you like to end up in the future from now? Shorn: “On a hover board……..In all honesty we are going to be the biggest band on the planet, we have no control over it, and it’s going to happen though”. Jay: “Yeah Wembley & more big things like that”. Tyler: “Wembley……nah, I think we all would just like to make a living by playing music to people that want to hear us”. Q5 - Which songs do you perform most frequently? Do you ever play any covers? Do you have a set play list? Shorn: “Blitzkrieg Bop by The Ramones has been in the set recently as like a tribute to Tommy or what not”. Jay: “Yeah our set list changes a bit except for a song named Apex we put at the start & a song called lost in a void we put near the very end”. (Tyler responds): “Apex is a great opener”. Tyler: “Yeah well we have an arranged set list of about 10 songs or something. Its been the same for a while now. I feel that allows the people to know what they are paying for I guess. But its always good to throw in a surprise song every once in a while”. Q6 – What advice would you give to bands who are starting out? Any small tricks to getting out there? Shorn: “Dont try and make the audience at the small club you’re playing at clap or sing along, they will give you a disgusted look and your ego will absolutely plummet for the rest of the show”. (Tyler responds): “Ha ha ha”. Q7 - How can other people access to your music? Do you have a website/Facebook page containing any of your music/demo’s? Shorn: “You can find our stuff on YouTube if you type up Opus – Apex”. (Link: https://youtube/watch?v=Yryiz05BIT0) Tyler: “Well we intend on recording in a few months so yeah. Ill let Shorn and the others get the music out there ha ha”. So there you have it, awesome responses from an awesome local Perth rock band. I had a great time interviewing these guys and I hope to review their newest album when it is released. Until next time, keep it cool people.
