Oral alternatives are needed says pharma firm: What is too large to swallow, can become stuck in your throat, and has an unpleasant taste? The answer, not surprisingly, is, “Pills.” A survey by two German firms (Hermes Pharma and pollster Spiegel Institut) found that 55 percent of users have difficulty swallowing them — an that’s not just older folks. In fact, 70 percent of 16-34 year olds said they had a problem swallowing. The issue is how patients respond: Some break up the tablets, others crush them and put them in a drink. In either case, release time can be affected. Worse, eight percent didn’t take their meds at all. Hermes suggests that drug makers find other ways to deliver the medication beyond tablets and capsules — chewable tablets, lozenges, orally disintegrating granules, even instant drinks.
