Orange is the new black marathon this weekend . Loving it & yet cant get over the realisation , episode after episode that the prison living conditions in the USA ( even accounting for some extra TV gloss) are far far FAR superior to the hostel I lived in for 4 years during my graduation BTech . Be it the sanitary conditions , the food ( what would we get for an average afforded Rs 3 per meal . No subsidies & basis what the average student would be ready to pay ) , the crowding in the rooms (5-6) the safety measures , the toilets without lights & moss infested bathrooms ... Would take an essay to describe & share those details . While the prison system is up for debate in terms of it ability to rehabilitate or curb the tendencies of criminals ... I wonder how the miserable living conditions in those 4 years of graduation , worse than a prison sentence would have affected & scarred our headspace ... Its unlikely that such a setting would even remotely foster a germ of creativity or even a basic appreciation of aesthetics ... It is indeed tough if not impossible to wallow in shit & magically sprout lotuss & lilies ( yeah yeah these flowers do grow in the dirt & I get the irony ) Sad thing is , there are always people worse of in a 3 rd world country & this post isnt about complaining cus all that changed in my mind when I visited Rale Gaon siddhi - the model village created by Anna hazare in my 3 rd year ... No money , no big resources but a spanking clean , simple & beautiful place maintained such by the local inhabitants .. I decided that day , that Id somehow make sure that I wont let the squalor , apathy & ugly surroundings get me down .. That Id not feel guilty aspiring for beautiful things & beauty ... Beauty begets beauty & I mean it at every level ... Including the lighting in my room , the clothes I wear , the hygiene outside my home ... To whatever extent that I can influence it .. I will . To be able to give birth to beauty in any form .. You have to .
