Oravița, Oravița Montană/ german Orawitz/hungarian Oravica, Németoravica/czech Oravice/serbian Оравица - population 15,265, is another mountain mining town (there are many in Banat). During the Turkish rule, was a Serbian village called Agadici . At the beginning of 18th century Germans begin to be colonised, from the today Czech Republic and from the Palatinate land. In 1900, it had 4314 inhabitants, from which 2274 germans (52,71%), 1487 romanians (34,46%), 418 hungarians (9,68%), 58 serbians (1,34%) and 52 czechs(1,20%) 2548 were roman-catholics, 1561 orthodox, 107 mosaics, 44 lutherans and 36 calvinists. 19% of the non hungarians, spoke hungarian language... In 2002, from 10 222 inhabitants, 9531 were romanians (93,24%), 216 gypsies (2,11%), 209 german (2,04%) and 141 hungarians(1,37%). 8837 were ortodox, 546 rroman-catholics, 260 baptists, 245 greek-catholics, 58 calvinists, etc. The Anina–Oravița was the first railway in todays Romania, opened in 1863 (second photo). Is the finest railway in Romania, with many spectacular viaducts and tunnels, going through rugged relief covered in prehistorical forests, in an area part of Nera Gorges - Beușnița National Park.
