Orcas Yesterday! Pat Hathaway took these great pics during our 8+ hour encounter with Biggs killer whales that porpoised into our area to join three killer whales that found a gray whale cow/calf pair. Many matrilines worked cooperatively to attack and eventually kill the calf. The gray whale mom fought valiantly for her calf; however, in this case they were far from land (no where to hide) with many attackers. The killer whales celebrated afterwards with lots of surface behaviors; we recorded incredible vocalizations. Amazing encounter!
