Oregon Department of Human Services leaders are coming to your community to hear how you think DHS should provide services! (See here for dates and locations: factoregon.org/events/community-events/) The OCDD has developed some talking points for families planning to share their stories at these town halls. Community integration: Step 1 Talk about the value of living, working and playing in the community: o Everyone, including people with I/DD are successful at home and work when they are part of their community. Oregon law and new federal rules recognize that everyone benefits when people with I/DD live and work in the most integrated settings and are able to choose services they need to meet their goals. Step 2: Tell your story about what being in the community means to you or your family. Step 3 pick one “ask” below to wrap up your comment: o Please commit to creating an I/DD system that makes sure services are based on a person‐centered plan, chosen by the person receiving services and delivered in an integrated, community setting. o Please commit to creating system assessment, quality assurance and monitoring plans that include input from people with I/DD and their families. K Plan Services: Step 1 Talk about the value of the K Plan: o The K Plan is an investment in people with I/DD. With increased access to supports, caseloads and costs are rising – but so are opportunities for people with I/DD to have the supports they need to be successful at home, work and in the community. Step 2 Tell your story about how the K Plan has helped you or your family: Step 3 wrap up your comment with the following “ask”: o Please commit to funding K Plan services at a level that continues to offer choice and meet the needs of people receiving services and their families. Employment: Step 1 talk about the value of people with I/DD working: o We believe that everyone must have equal opportunities to find success in the workforce and participate in their community. In partnership with DHS, we are working to make this happen, but our work is not done. Step 2 tell your story about why employment is important to you: Step 3 Wrap up your comment: o Thousands of Oregonians with I/DD rely on the DD System and providers for support to create that path into their workforce and community. Without funding for supports, these Oregonians risk segregation at home, or in settings away from the community. o With proper funding for DD services and providers, we believe Oregon can truly provide a pathway for everyone to be successful in the workforce and their community. Please support funding for I/DD employment services and providers.
