Organic, natural, grass-fed, free-range have all become popular and in demand. And the big players in the food industry have noticed - note Walmart and its organic food. But this is big business and they are figuring out the labels and the marketing. Theyve got the form right. What they dont have is the essence. They dont have local/sustainable (which is much of what all the other tags are built around) and they dont want it. Local/sustainable means working with small farmers and ranchers, not one big traditional farmer or rancher who now can do organic, or natural. But what the big boys do offer to the public is organic, natural, etc wrapped in convenience. Its nice and quick and easy to buy everything in one place. Because small farmers and ranchers are not convenient they have no way of competing against this new group of biggers. They have no way into the distribution system that favors the biggers. They have no way of marketing against them. The question is: do we want our organic, natrual, grass-fed, free-range food raised not much differently than the conventional food and just labelled more nicely?
