However, Bed Bugs are brought in by persons traveling to infested countries found throughout Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America – and now the U.S.BehaviorBed Bugs behave much like a German cockroach, hiding in cracks & crevices of all forms. They are described as nocturnal feeders, but in fact will feed during the day in a darkened room. If their numbers are so high they are competing for food, they will feed anytime.The Common Bed Bug has the noted tendency of running to people, contrary to the cockroach which runs from people.The bug feeds where the body meets the bed, often leaving red bite marks in a line on the person. Blood spots will also be left on the sheets as the bugs excrete excess fluids, forcefully ejecting the blood with pressure.There may be a distinctive musky smell associated with large populations of Bed Bugs.They appear to have developed the recognition of luggage, climbing into open suitcases placed on the bed or floor.Eggs are glued to objects thereby resisting vacuuming and or brushing.Prevention• Advise people of the bug’s habits so when traveling they can avoid the pest.• Advise people on how to recognize the evidence of the presence of the pest.• Interview people prior to contracting with – have verbiage in the agreement that requires the client to makeproperty available for treatment.• Mattress & Pillow encasement systems – excludes the mattress as harborage.Physical Control• This most often requires taking a room apart - bed, nightstands, items off the wall such as art work, outlet covers, switch plates, and more.• Steaming the mattress seams, labels, and bed framing. There are still the night stands, baseboards, and framed pictures!• Pesticide –o thorough treatment of cracks & crevices with contact and residual kill products.o Treatment of electronic items within sealed bag/chamber using heat, freezing, or fumigation withfumigant strips
